Missions in the Bible – Dr. Mel Loucks. 
 As Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives and looked at his followers just previous to his ascension into heaven, the last command he gave to his followers was, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” That should be our first concern. But we also need to keep in mind that it was not where missions began in the Bible. So many of us think that missions began with Christ’s Great Commission but it started long before that. 1. William Carey


William Carey (17 August 1761 – 9 June 1834) was a British missionary, a Particular Baptist minister, a translator and an activist. He also opened the first University in (Serampore) India offering degrees.

He is known as the "father of modern missions." His essay, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians to Use Means for the Conversion of the Heathens, led to the founding of the Baptist Missionary Society. He went to Kolkata (India) in 1793, but was forced to leave the British Indian territory by non-Baptist missionaries. He joined the Baptist missionaries in the Danish colony of Frederiksnagar in India (Serampore), and there he lived with people ravaged by extreme poverty and diseases. He translated the Bible into Bengali, Oriya, Assamese,Arabic, Hindi and Sanskrit.

2.Hudson Taylor

James Hudson Taylor (21 May 1832 – 3 June 1905) was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China and founder of the China Inland Mission (CIM, now OMF International). Taylor spent 51 years in China. The society that he began was responsible for bringing over 800 missionaries to the country who began 125 schools and directly resulted in 18,000 Christian conversions, as well as the establishment of more than 300 stations of work with more than 500 local helpers in all eighteen provinces.

Philip James "Jim" Elliot (October 8, 1927 – January 8, 1956) was an evangelical Christian who was one of five missionaries killed while participating in Operation Auca, an attempt toevangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador.

5. David Livingstone

David Livingstone (19 March 1813 – 1 May 1873) was a ScottishCongregationalist pioneer medical missionary with the London Missionary Society and an explorer in Africa. His meeting with H. M. Stanley on 10 November 1871 gave rise to the popular quotation "Dr. Livingstone, I presume?"

6. Amy Carmichael

Amy Wilson Carmichael (16 December 1867 – 18 January 1951) was a Protestant Christian missionary in India, who opened an orphanage and founded a mission. One of the best-known and respected missionaries of the first half of the 20thcentury was Amy Carmichael. Her 35 books have blessed countless thousands. One who knew her well gives this testimony: "Miss Carmichael was a blessing to all who came into intimate and understanding contact with her radiant life. She was the most Christ-like character I ever met, and her life was the most fragrant, the most joyfully sacrificial that I have ever known." (Info from Gospel Fellowship Association.) The mission she started, Dohnavur Fellowship still operates in India today. Read More
